Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a safe, gentle way to lighten the natural shade of your teeth and brighten your smile. At Maria White Dental we provide professional at-home whitening with custom-made trays, prescribed and supervised by our dentists, so you get a noticeable, natural-looking result in the comfort of your own home.

Our whitening system: Boutique Whitening

Boutique Whitening logo

We use Boutique Whitening, a professional whitening system available only through dental professionals. We will recommend the option that best suits your teeth, your sensitivity and your lifestyle.

  • Day whitening – 6% hydrogen peroxide: worn for a short time during the day, ideal if you prefer not to sleep in your trays.
  • Night whitening – 16% carbamide peroxide: worn overnight while you sleep.
  • Night whitening – 10% carbamide peroxide: a gentler option, available on request, which can suit people with more sensitive teeth.

A full whitening kit provides approximately 20 applications. If you are an existing patient and already have your own whitening trays, you do not need new ones: we can supply refill packs so you can top up your smile whenever you like.

Why choose professional whitening?

In the UK, tooth whitening may only be carried out by a dentist or by other registered dental professionals working under a dentist’s prescription. Professional whitening is more effective and much safer than shop-bought kits or whitening offered by beauty salons, because:

  • we check that your teeth and gums are healthy before you start
  • your trays are custom-made to fit your teeth precisely, keeping the gel on the teeth and away from the gums
  • you use a regulated professional whitening gel at the right strength for you
  • we monitor your progress and manage any sensitivity

How does at-home whitening work?

  1. Assessment – we check your teeth and gums, discuss the result you would like and record your starting shade. Whitening is not suitable for everyone, and some patients need a check-up or hygiene visit first.
  2. Digital scan – we take a quick, comfortable scan of your teeth so your trays can be made in the laboratory.
  3. Fitting appointment – we fit your trays, show you how much gel to use and explain how long to wear them.
  4. Whitening at home – you wear the trays with the gel as instructed, usually for around two to three weeks.
  5. Review – we check your new shade. Keep your trays: you can use top-up gel in the future to maintain your result.

What can whitening improve?

  • Yellowing with age
  • Staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking
  • Generally dull or uneven tooth colour

Whitening only works on natural teeth. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings or composite bonding, so we will plan around any existing restorations. If you are planning composite bonding or veneers, whitening is usually done first.

Looking after your result

  • Avoid strongly coloured food and drinks for the first 48 hours
  • Cut down on tea, coffee, red wine and smoking to keep your teeth whiter for longer
  • Keep up with your check-ups and hygiene visits – Airflow cleaning removes surface stains
  • Use top-up gel in your trays when needed

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, when it is prescribed and supervised by a dental professional. Whitening is only suitable for adults aged 18 and over, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Does whitening cause sensitivity?
Some people notice mild, temporary sensitivity during treatment. It usually settles quickly, and we can adjust how often you wear the trays or recommend a desensitising toothpaste.

How long do the results last?
Results commonly last a year or more, depending on your diet and habits. Occasional top-ups with your trays help keep your smile bright.

Will whitening change the colour of my fillings or crowns?
No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth, so existing fillings, crowns or veneers may need replacing afterwards if you would like them to match.

How much does teeth whitening cost?
A full at-home whitening kit with custom-made trays is £385, and refill packs for existing patients with their own trays are £85. Please see our Fees page for current prices and our Offers page for any current promotions.
