Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal treatment is the treatment of gum disease. It focuses on the health of your gums and the tissues that support your teeth, including the bone that holds them in place.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by the build-up of plaque bacteria around the teeth and under the gum line. In its early stage (gingivitis) the gums can become red, swollen and bleed when you brush. If it is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the bone and tissues supporting the teeth are gradually lost.
Common signs include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
- Receding gums or teeth looking longer
- Loose teeth, or teeth that have moved or developed gaps

Why is it important?
Gum disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults. It is often painless, so many people do not realise they have it until it is advanced. Healthy gums are also important for your general health, as gum disease has been linked with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
The good news is that with early diagnosis, professional treatment and good care at home, gum disease can be controlled and your teeth can be kept for longer.
Your treatment journey
1. Periodontal consultation (around 1 hour)
We carry out a thorough assessment of the health of your gums and supporting tissues, including the bone, in all areas of your mouth. This includes detailed gum measurements around every tooth and, where needed, X-rays. We then explain our findings and agree a personalised treatment plan with you.
2. Treatment
Treatment is normally carried out in a single appointment or over several appointments, depending on your needs. We carefully clean the root surfaces below the gum line to remove plaque and hardened deposits, and show you the best way to look after your gums at home.
3. Reviews and maintenance
After treatment we will see you for review appointments to check how your gums have healed, followed by regular maintenance appointments to keep your gums healthy in the long term.
If you have noticed any signs of gum disease, book a consultation and we will help you keep your smile healthy.

Frequently asked questions
Is periodontal treatment painful?
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic where needed, so it is comfortable. Your gums may feel tender for a few days afterwards.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gum disease can be controlled and stabilised with treatment and good home care, but it needs ongoing maintenance to stop it returning.
How often will I need maintenance appointments?
Usually every 3 to 4 months at first, depending on how your gums respond.
How much does periodontal treatment cost?
Please see our Fees page; your treatment plan will include all costs after your consultation.
